The first thing that I would
recommend that you do, is go to the Practice
Paper Piecing Page. When you feel comfy with paper
piecing, come on back and try a Spider's Den Block! You will need to print out
one copy of the template page per block you want to make on very
lightweight paper. Fat Quarters should be plenty! |

** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 2 2-1/2" x 14"
strip into four 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles...
Now sew together two Color 2 and one Color 1 1-1/2" x
12" strips along the long edges in a 1/4" seam, as
shown at left. Press seams towards the darker fabric. Mark and cut
this at 1-1/2" intervals to make eight smaller units...
Next sew together two Color 1 and one Color 2 1-1/2" x
20" strips along the long edges in a 1/4" seam, as
shown at left. Press seams towards the darker fabric. Mark and cut
this into four 3-1/2" units and four 1-1/2" units...
Sew the 1-1/2" units together to make four nine patches as shown
at left. These should measure 3-1/2"...
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips,
right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top
strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the
diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4"
above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines.
Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2- 7/8" square
lines. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances
towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...on to Page 2!
