Plaid Scrap Block

It's a 12" block!

This pattern combines regular piecing, with some template OR Paper Piecing of the diamond section!

Click here for the PP or regular template!

This is an original pattern. Please abide by the Terms and Conditions of use! :o)

If you want to practice some Paper Piecing, I suggest that you go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page! When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Plaid Scrap Block! You will need to print out two copies of  the two unit needed per block you want to make on very lightweight paper.  A Fat Quarter of each fabric is plenty!

For those of you who are proceeding with regular piecing of the diamond portion of this block, print off the templates from above. Cut out the diamond shape and one each of the right facing and left facing side triangles. (Just one triangle is fine if you are using fabric without a directional pattern) Tape these to a new sheet of paper.  Add 1/4" to each side of these, cut these new templates out and use them to cut your fabrics from. :o)

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Mark and cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 13-1/2" strip into one 4-1/2" x 9" rectangle, and one 4-1/2" square...

Next, for those of you using templates (not Paper Piecing)...lay your templates on the Color 3 rectangle as shown here at left and cut out eight triangles...

Now use the templates to cut out two diamonds...

Using all 1/4" seams, sewn the triangles to the sides of the diamond, pressing the seam allowances towards the darker fabrics...on to Page 2!
