** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

I suggest for this one, since there are once again many pieces, that you print off several copies of the templates. Darken the outlines for each piece you will need...cut out...add the 1/4" seam allowances. *Note* the legs are cut as one piece.  Dotted lines on the templates show pieces that are underneath other pieces. I didn't list it as a needed color, but you will also need an 8 1/2-9" square of white background fabric! You'll also need some black floss for the facial features and the line that spans the drum bottom, some skin colored floss to define the fingers and chin, some floss to match the pants to define the leg separation and hat brim, and some floss to match the jacket to define the arms, chest and collar.

Follow the directions below for order of placement :o)

On an 8 1/2"-9" square of white background fabric, lay out ALL the pieces, so that you can arrange them where you like them best. Remove all but the head and feet pieces. Pin the face on, with the hair over it, and appliqué them to the background, using thread to match the piece being sewn on. Then pin the shoes on, with the gaiters over them, and appliqué them down using thread to match...

Next, pin on the two jacket pieces and the legs piece, and the hat  and appliqué them in place, using thread to match ...

Then pin on the chest flap and the left arm drumstick, with hand over it, with sleeve cuff over that, and appliqué them in place, using thread to match ...

Now add the drum strap, and appliqué it in place, using thread to match ...

Next pin on the drum bottom, the main drum body, and then the two gold drum bands, so that the bottom drum band covers the bottom's edges. Applique in place using thread to match. Pin on the right drumstick, with the hand over it, and the sleeve cuff covering the hands' and the jacket sleeve's edge. Appliqué in place using thread to match...

Then pin on and appliqué the two red drum stripes, using thread to match...

Now pin on and appliqué the drum ropes using thread to match...

Next, pin on and appliqué down the rope sliders, or whatever you call those thingies that hold the ropes on the side of a drum :o) using thread to match. Pin on and appliqué small circles for buttons on the chest piece and on the right sleeve cuff. Using black floss, embroider facial features. Using flesh colored floss embroider chin definition. Using floss to match the jacket, backstitch left chest, and right arm definition. Using floss to match the pants, backstitch pants line definition, and hat brim definition....now THIS drummer, is ready to join the parade!!    Here's one that Nancy made!

Now...I am going to do something different, and NOT show a quilt of this yet

...I have in mind doing all Twelve Days of Christmas!

Stay Tuned! :o)

in the meantime...Happy Quilting!
