** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing
the Block **
I suggest for this one, since there are once again
many pieces, that you print off several copies of the templates. Darken the outlines for
each piece you will need...cut out...add the 1/4" seam allowances. Dotted
lines on the
templates show pieces that are underneath other pieces. I didn't list it as a needed
color, but you will also need an 8 1/2-9" square of white background
fabric! You'll also need some gold embroidery floss to embroider the jacket
embellishments, some red floss to do the gaiter ties, and some black floss for the facial
features.
Follow the directions below for order of placement

On an 8 1/2"-9" square of white background
fabric, lay out ALL the pieces, so that you can arrange them where you like them best.
Remove all but the music notes, the head and hair, the sword pieces, and the feet and legs.
Pin them in place, being sure to have the hair slightly overlapping the face, and the
stockings slightly overlapping the shoes, and appliqué them to the background, using
thread to match the pieces being sewn on... |
|
|
Next pin on the hat, the pants and the shirt piece,
having the pants overlap the stockings slightly, and the shirt overlap the pants slightly,
and the hat overlap the hair slightly, and appliqué them in place, using thread to match
... |
|
|
Then pin the trim piece on the hat, and pin on the
jacket piece, and appliqué them in place, using thread to match ... |
|
|
Now add the left hand and the two jacket flaps, and
appliqué them in place, using thread to match ...leave the THUMB of that hand free for
now... |
|
|
Next add the flute, pinning it UNDER the thumb of the
left hand. Add the left sleeve lace, and the left jacket sleeve and appliqué
them all in
place, using thread to match, including the thumb now. Pin on, but don't
appliqué the right jacket sleeve yet... |
|
|
Then pin the left hand over the flute, the left lace
over the hand slightly, and tuck the lace under the right sleeve you had pinned on.
Applique this all in place using thread to match the pieces being sewn on... |
|
|
Lastly, using gold floss and satin stitch, embroider
a belt band across the Piper's midsection, and then another band that runs down the front
of the jacket and edges the two jacket flaps. Still using gold floss, embroider two small
stars at the peak of each jacket flap. Also in gold floss...embroider some filigree across
the jacket front, and two buttons on each jacket sleeve. Using black floss and a
backstitch, embroider the facial features. Using red floss and a back stitch, embroider a
thin gaiter garter band just under the knees. Near the outside edge of each
leg, and on the garter line, embroider in satin stitch, a circle of red. Either backstitch
two "ribbon ends" dangling down from the red circles, or leave two floss ends
hanging... Now let's get the needles out of that poor guy and listen to him Pipe! :o)
Here's
one that Nancy made!
