This makes a 9" block! It's a circa 1920 block, and is also called "Star Diamond"

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** 

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-3/8" x 9-1/2" strip into four 2-3/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles. Label these HST-A's. Now cut the Color 1  2-3/4" x 5-1/2" strip into two 2-3/4" squares. Cut these in half on both diagonal s to make eight quarter square triangles. Label these QST-A's...

Then cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares.  Label these Square-A's. Cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 6" strip into four 1-1/2" squares. Label these Square-B's.  Cut the Color 2  1-5/8" x 6-1/2" strip into four 1-5/8" squares. Label these Square-C's. Cut the Color 2  4-1/4" square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square triangles. Label these QST-B's...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  1-7/8" x 15" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 1-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 1-7/8" square lines. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 1-1/2" . Label these your SMALL HSTS...

Speed piece the larger half square units in the same manner as above  using the Color 1 and Color 2  2" x 8" strips. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 1-5/8" . Label; these your LARGE HSTS ...on to Page 2!
