This makes a 14" block! 

One of these was made in Greenspring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 1839 by Margaret Thompson Blean.

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block ** 

 

 

Using the templates provided, cut out the indicated number of units from the Color 1  9" x 36" strip...

 

 

Then cut the units indicated from the Color 2  8" x 27" strip...

 

Now sew sixteen pairs of trapezoids by placing two traps right sides together and using a 1/4" seam allowance from a point 1/4" in from the V (Inner) corner to the lower right edge, backstitching one stitch at the beginning (inner) edge. Press seams to one side. Inset a triangle by sewing from the outer edge to a point 1/4" from the point of the triangle. Backstitch. Now FOLD the unit in half right sides together to line up the remaining un-sewn edge. Sew from the previous stopping point to the outside edge, backstitching one stitch at the beginning of the seam. Repeat this with all sixteen trap units...
