** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First mark and cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  4-1/2" x 22-1/2" strip into five 4-1/2" squares...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 3  5" x 20" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares...

To make the corner units, place a Color 1 small square atop the left top corner of a Color 2  4-1/2" square, right sides together. On the back of the small square lightly draw a diagonal line, and sew on this drawn line. Cut off the excess seam, allowance and press the remainder towards the outer triangles. Repeat this with another Color 1 small square in the opposite corner. Repeat with two Color 3 small squares in the remaining two corners, pressing the last two additions towards the center square. Make four of these units. These should measure 4-1/2" square...

Make four flying geese units by following the same procedure as in the step above, using Color 3 small squares, and Color 2   2-1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles as the bases. These should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" ...

Speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3   2-7/8" x 11-1/2"strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left, and mark the 2-7/8" square lines as well. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonal lines, then cut apart ON the marked diagonals and on the square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. These should measure 2-1/2"...on to Page 2!
