** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  5" x 7" strip into four 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles. Then mark and cut the Color 1  3" x 6" strip into eight 1-1/2" squares...

Next mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares

Now mark and cut the Color 3  3" x 15" strip into twenty 1-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  1-7/8" x 7-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 1-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 1-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 1-1/2" . Repeat this with a Color 2/Color 3 strip set to get eight more half squares in that color arrangement...

To make the side rectangle units, place a Color 3  1-1/2" square right sides together atop the upper left corner of  a Color 1 rectangle with outside edges aligned. I show them staggered a bit here; yours shouldn't be.  Mark the diagonal as shown, and sew through all layers on the marked line. Trim off excess seam allowance. Press remainder towards center. Do the same on the opposing corners, and then on the two adjacent corners. Make four units like this...
