The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try an Irises and Lions wall hanging! You will need to print out four copies of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper.

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

The hanging is made with three block units...shown below:

Block A

Block B (Paper Pieced)

Block C

Start by cutting the Color 1  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...
Then mark and cut the Color 4  2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" strips...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
