The first thing that I would
recommend that you do, is go to the Practice
Paper Piecing Page. When you feel comfy with paper
piecing, come on back and try a Grampy's Shirt Block! The Octagon
sections of this block are regular pieced. Print those templates off
on one sheet of regular copy paper. You will need to print out two
copies of each Block B page per block you want to make on very
lightweight paper for paper piecing. FQ's or scraps will be fine! |

** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Using the templates provided, cut two octagons and four triangles from
Color 1 and Color 2 plaids. Cut twenty four triangles from Color 3 tan
or cream plaid...
|
|
|
Sew a Color 3 triangle to each Color 1 triangle, using a scant
1/4" seam, and pressing to the dark side. Trim these half squares
back to 1-1/2" if needed. Sew a Color 3 triangle to the right and
bottom sides as shown at left. Press seams towards the new triangles.
Make four units like this with Color 1 and four with Color 2...
|
|
|
Sew the corner pieced triangle units to the Octagons as shown at left.
Make one unit like this with Color 1 and one with Color 2. Use care
here, as these edges, both the Octagon, and Triangles, will be on the
bias...do not stretch while sewing or pressing!
|
|
|
Now paper piece your Block B's, and when they are done join them as
shown at left, to make two units like this. Use random colored plaids
alternated with TAN OR CREAM plaids...on to Page
2!
