To make the Hourglass squares for the North,
South, East and West parts of the block, speed piece the Color 1 and Color 3 5-1/4" x 10-1/2" strips, in the same manner as the speed piecing above
EXCEPT...after you cut them apart, stack the resultant triangles, still closed, and using
a ruler and rotary cutter, cut them again on the other diagonal. This will give you eight
quarter square triangles... |
|
|
Sew the pairs of triangles together in pairs of
two, to make four Hourglass units. Trim to measure 4-1/2" if
needed... |
|
|
To make the block's center, place a Color 1
2-1/2" square right sides together atop the Color 2 4-1/2" square, with
all edges aligned. (I show them not aligned here, just so you can see that there are two
layers) On the back of the small square, lightly draw the diagonal, and sew ON this marked
line. Cut off the excess seam allowance and press the remainder towards the Color 2
square. Repeat this with another Color 1 small square on the opposite corner. Repeat this
again with the last two Color 1 squares on the other two corners, always
pressing the seam
allowances towards the outer triangles... |
|
|
Now piece the block by sewing the previously made
units together into rows, and then joining the rows. As always, use all 1/4"
seams to do this!...on to Page 3!
