The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Florida Star Block! You will need to print out two copies of the template A page, and one of the template B page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. Fat quarters will be ample!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 2   5" x 10" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Sew those squares and half squares together as shown at left to make the block's four corners, using scant 1/4" seams. Make four units like this. Trim them back to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

...on to Page 2!
