** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting the Color 1 5" x 20" strip into
sixteen 2-1/2" squares. Then cut the Color 1 2-7/8"
x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares...
|
|
|
Now cut the Color 2 4-1/2" x 22-1/2" strip into
five 4-1/2" squares. Next cut the Color 2 9" x
13" strip into four 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Then
cut the Color 2 2-1/2" x 10" strip into four
2-1/2" squares. Now cut the Color 2 2-7/8"
x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares...
|
|
|
To make the half square units, pair up the Color 1 and Color
2 2-7/8" squares right sides together and all edges
aligned. On the back of the top squares lightly draw in the diagonals.
Sew a scant 1/4" away on each side of the drawn lines. Cut apart
on the drawn lines between the rows of stitching. Each square-pair
will give you two half square units; you will be making a total of
eight half squares. Press seams to darker side, and trim each unit to
measure 2-1/2" if needed...

|
Now, to make the block's side units, place a Color 1 2-1/2"
square right sides together atop the upper left corner of a Color 2
rectangle, with outer edges aligned. On the back of the top square
lightly mark the diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut
off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner.
Repeat this with another Color 1 square on the adjacent corner of the
rectangle. These should measure 4-1/2" x 6-1/2". Make four
of these units...on to Page 2!
