This makes a 12" block and is partly paper pieced!

The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Caned Squares Block! You will need to print out two copies of each template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. Fat quarters should be plenty!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Sew together the two Color 1 and two Color 4  1-1/2" x 15" strips as shown at far top left, using scant 1/4" seams, and pressing seams to dark side. Mark and cut this at 1-1/2" intervals. Repeat this same procedure with another Color 1 and Color 4  1-1/2" x 15" strip set, as shown at lower left, and again cut at 1-1/2" intervals...

Mark and cut the Color 4  2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares...

Sew together five units as shown at left. Sew the shorter strip sets to the sides of the center square, then add the top and bottom strip sets...

Now paper piece your side units. Once they are done, lay out all the units as shown at left. Sew three horizontal rows, pressing the seams of the top and bottom rows to the center, and the middle row seams to the outside. Join the rows and your  block is complete!

...on to Page 2!
