The first thing that I would
recommend that you do, is go to the Practice
Paper Piecing Page. When you feel comfy with paper
piecing, come on back and try a Blazing Star block! You will need to print out
one copy of the template page per block you want to make on very
lightweight paper. Fat Quarters should be plenty! |

** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting one Color 2 1-1/2" x 12" strip into
eight 1-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 3 3-7/8" x 15-1/2" strips, right
sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip,
lightly mark the 3-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in
the direction shown at left. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut
apart on the marked diagonals and on the 3-7/8" square lines.
This will give you eight half squares. Press seams towards the darker
fabric. Place a Color 2 square right sides together against the
lower corner of each. Draw in the diagonal on the back of the small
square and sew on the drawn line. Cut off the excess seam allowance,
pressing the remainder towards the triangle. (Half will be sewn
onto the lower right as shown at left-the other half will need to be
on the lower left, with your half square turned once to the left.)
Trim these back to measure 3-1/2" if needed. Sew these together
in pairs and press seam to one side. Make four units like this...

|
Now sew together two Color 3 and one Color 2 1-1/2" x
12" strips along the long edges, Press seams to darker side. Cut
this apart at 1-1/2" intervals to make eight pieced units. Sew
together two Color 2 and one Color 3 1-1/2" x 6"
strips in the same manner and cut at 1-1/2" intervals to make
four pieced units. Using these sew four of the Nine Patch units shown
at bottom left. Trim to 3-1/2" if needed...on to Page
2!
