The first thing that I would recommend that you do, is go to the Practice Paper Piecing Page.  When you feel comfy with paper piecing, come on back and try a Birds in Flight  block! You will need to print out one copy of the template page per block you want to make on very lightweight paper. A Fat Quarter of each fabric is PLENTY!

After your paper piecing is done, sew a 3-1/2" x 9-1/2" strip of complementary fabric between and the block is complete!

When making a quilt  you don't really make "blocks"...but rather do bed length columns of paper piecing, alternated with the same length columns of coordinating fabric!

Here on its side is a whole quilt, done in reproduction 1775-1800 fabrics!!

Happy Quilting Folks!
