The first thing that I would
recommend that you do, is go to the Practice
Paper Piecing Page. When you feel comfy with paper
piecing, come on back and try a Bird of Paradise Block! You will need to print out
two copies of the template page per block you want to make on very
lightweight paper. Fat Quarters should be plenty! |

** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 and Color 2 2-1/2"
x 5" strips into two 2-1/2" squares of each...
The sew together a set of Color 1 and Color 3 2-1/2" x
10" strips, right sides together along one long edge, using a
scant 1/4" seam. Press seam towards the darker side. Mark and cut
this at 2-1/2" intervals...
Do the same thing again to make a Color 2 / Color 3 set...
Sew the pieced square sets together as shown at left to make four
patches...two of Color 1 / Color 3, two of Color 2 / Color 3, and one
using the small squares we cut in step one...
After your units are paper pieced, lay out the block units as you see
them at left. Sew these together into three horizontal rows, using
scant 1/4" seams. Press the seams of the top and bottom rows to
the outside, and the middle row seams towards the center. Now join the
rows, and the block is all finished!
...on to Page 2!
