** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 3  3-1/2" x 17-1/2" strip into five 3-1/2" squares...

Then place the Color 1 and Color 3  3-7/8" x 23-1/4" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly mark this strip off into six 3-7/8" squares. Then Mark the diagonals in the direction shown. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals in one continuous seam, pivoting at the square lines. Cut this apart on the square lines, and on the diagonal lines between the stitching. This will give you twelve half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 3-1/2"...

Now cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 14" strip into two 1-1/2" x 7" strips. Sew a Color 3 strip of the same length to the bottom of one Color 2 strip, using as always a 1/4" seam. Add another Color 2 strip to the bottom of the Color 3 strip. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Mark and cut this three strip unit at the 3-1/2" point...

Next mark and cut the Color 3  3" x 3-1/2" rectangle into two 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strips. Cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 6" rectangle into four 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" strips. Sew a Color 3 strip to the right of a Color 2 strip. Add another Color 2 strip to the right of this. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. Make two of these units. **NOTE...if I wasn't using intentionally directional fabrics here, this step and the last could have been combined, using just strips of Color 2 and Color 3, and cut into four units...
