** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by cutting the Color 1  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strip into two 3-7/8" squares. Stack these and cut them once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles. Cut the Color 1  5-1/4" x  9-1/2" strip into four 2-5/8" x 4-3/4" rectangles. Cut the Color 1  2" x 8" strip into four 2" squares...

 Cut the Color 2  2-5/8" x 10-1/2" strip into four 2-5/8" squares...

Cut the Color 3  2-3/8" x 9-1/2" strip into four 2-3/8" squares. Stack these and cut them in half once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles..

Now we'll speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-3/8" x 19" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-3/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-3/8" square lines. This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2"...

Using all 1/4" seams, sew four of each of the units shown at left. (using half squares, 2" Color 1 squares, and 2-3/8" Color 3 half square triangles as needed) This will give you four long pieced units and four short pieced units...
