** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 3-1/2" x 7" strip into two 3-1/2" squares...

 Next mark and cut the Color 2  1-1/4" x 10" strip into two 1-1/4" x 5" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  1-1/4" x 13" strip into two 1-1/4" x 6-1/2" rectangles...

Now speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-7/8" x 19-3/8" strips right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3 7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 3 7/8" square lines too. This will give you ten half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 3-1/2"...

Sew together two each of the half square pairs shown at left, pressing seams to dark side...

Sew the shorter Color 2 strips to the top and bottom of the Color 1 5" square, pressing seams towards outer strips. Sew the longer Color 2 strips to the right and left of this, again pressing seams towards outer strips...on to Page 2!
