** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 3  5" x 11" strip into four 2-1/2" x 5-1/2"rectangles...

Next mark and cut the Color 4  1-1/2" x 10" strip into four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...

Sew the block's center by making three horizontal rows as shown at left. Row one = two half squares and a Color 4 rectangle. Row two = two Color 4 rectangles and the Color 2  1-1/2" square. Row three = two half squares and a Color 4 rectangle. Join these using 1/4" seams, pressing the top and bottom row seams to the outside, and the center row seam to the center. Join the three rows, again using a 1/4" seam...on to Page 2!
