** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by cutting the Color 1 7-1/4" square in half twice
on the diagonal to make the block's four side triangles...
Next mark and cut the Color 2 and Color 3 3" x 6"
strips into two squares of each. Stack the squares and cut them once
on the diagonal to make four half square triangles of each color...
Sew four pieced triangle units as shown at left, for the blocks
corners. Use scant 1/4" seams, and press those seams to the
darker side...
Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the
Color 4 and Color 2 3 " x 15" strips, right sides
together and all edges aligned. On the backs of the top strips,
lightly mark off the 3" square lines, and then mark the diagonals
in the direction shown at left...Now sew a scant 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the 3 " square lines. Cut
apart on the square lines, and on the marked diagonals. This will give
you ten half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker
fabrics. Repeat this with a Color 4 and Color 3 strip set...
Sew together eight pairs of Color 2 and Color 3 half squares as shown
at left. Use the standard scant 1/4" seam allowance, and press
seams to darker side...
The sew two half square pairs together. Press seam towards lower unit.
Make four units like this...
Sew a pieced triangle unit to the top of each of the four half square
units. Press seam towards lower unit...on to Page 2!
