Cut the Color 5 2-1/2" x 18" (2" x 14") strip into
four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"
rectangles.(2" x 3-1/2")...
Next cut the Color 5 3-1/4" (2-3/4")
square in half on both diagonals to make four quarter square
triangles...
Now cut the Color 5 4-1/2" x 13-1/2" (3-1/2"
x 10-1/2") strip into three 4-1/2" (3-1/2")

Now, to make the flying geese units, place a Color 1 2-1/2" (2")
square right sides together atop a Color 5 2-1/2" x
4-1/2" (2" x 3-1/2") rectangle, with outer
edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the
diagonal. Sew on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam
allowance. Press the remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with
another Color 1 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four
flying geese units like this... |

Now we'll make the Half/Quarter Squares! Using a scant 1/4" seam
allowance start by sewing together two Color 1/Color 3 3-1/4" (2-3/4")quarter
square triangles. Press seams to darker side. Sew a Color 3 half
square triangle to this, to make a Half/ Quarter Square. Trim to measure 2-1/2" (2")
if needed. Make three more Half/Quarter Squares in this color arrangement,
and then follow the diagram at left to make the four others needed... |
|
|
Now it's time to start assembling the block! Sew a Color1 square to
the right edge of a Color 1/Color 3 Half/Quarter Square. Press seam to one
side. Add a Flying Geese unit to the top of that
unit. Press seam to one side... |
|
|
Then sew Color 1 square to the bottom of a
Color1/Color 3 Half/Quarter Square, pressing seam to one side. Sew a
Flying Geese unit to the left side of that. Press
seam to one side... |
|
|
Now sew a Color 2 2-1/2" (2") square to a
Color1/Color 3 Half/Quarter Square, pressing seam to one side.
Then sew a Color1/Color 3 Half/Quarter Square to a Color 1
2-1/2" (2") square, again pressing seam to one
