Next, sew the Color 3 half square triangles to
opposing sides of the unit you just made, again using SCANT 1/4" seams. Add the next
two half square triangles to the remaining two sides... |
|
|
Now line up a Color 3 2-1/2" square
atop a Color 1 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangle, right sides together. Mark the
diagonal lightly on the back of the Color 1 square, and sew ON this marked diagonal. Cut
off excess seam allowance; press remainder towards the outer triangle. Sew another square
on the other end of the rectangle in the same manner. Make four of these units... |

Then speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides
together and all edges aligned. Mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the
diagonals in the direction shown at left as well. Sew a SCANT 1/4" above the marked
diagonals in one continuous seam from the upper left corner to the upper right corner,
pivoting at the 2-7/8" square lines. Turn fabric and sew back the other way a
SCANT 1/4" on the other side of the marked diagonals .Cut apart
on the marked diagonals,
and on the 2-7/8" square lines as well. This will give you eight half squares... |

Sew one half square to either end of the flying
geese rectangles, referring to the diagram at left for placement and
direction. Make four
of these... |
|
|
And now piece the block! Add a Color 1 2-1/2
" square to each end of two of the units you just made, then sew
rows. Join the rows to
make the block. Be sure to alternate pressing directions by row to avoid bulky seams!
