Rows 1 and 8 need one Color 6 small square,
one Color 4 small square, one Color 6 2-1/2" x 16-1/2" strip, one
Color 4 small square, and one Color 6 small square. Sew these together as shown at left
using the standard 1/4" seam. You will be making two rows like this... |
|
|
For Row 2, let's start by speed piecing the half
squares. Stack the Color 6 and Color 5 2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides
together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark
the 2-7/8" square line and the diagonals. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked
diagonals. Cut this apart on the 2-7/8" square line, and on the marked diagonals
between the rows of stitching. This will give you four half squares... |

Row 2, (the only kinda tough row in the whole
block) will need the following units: A: One from a Color 4 small square,
a Color 6 4-1/2" rectangle, a half square. B: One from a Color
4 small square, A Color 6 4-1/2" rectangle, a half square reversed.
C:
Two units from a Color 2 small square, a Color 6 4-1/2" rectangle. D:
Now place a Color 6 small square right sides together atop the left end of a Color 2
4-1/2" rectangle. Draw the diagonal on the back of the Color 6 square and sew ON the
marked diagonal. Cut of the excess seam allowance, leaving 1/4". You need one unit
like this, and one unit with the square sewn to the RIGHT end. I am going to call it a speed
corner, and this will be repeated throughout the block's construction.
(Sew a Color 6 4-1/2" rectangle between the two D units, as
shown already pieced in the step below.) |
|
E:
Speed corner one unit using a Color 1 8-1/2" rectangle and two Color 2 small squares.
F:
Speed corner two units using Color 1 4-1/2" rectangles, and a Color 6 small square on
the left and right respectively. G: Speed corner the bear's nose unit
using a Color 2 4-1/2" square as the base, and Color 1 and Color 3 small
squares in the corners as shown at left. Remember to LINE UP the squares with the base
square, I show it staggered here so you can see the pieces that are being used!... |

Now piece Row 2, using the units we just made, as
shown at left. Use all 1/4 inch seams...on to Page
3! |
