To make the block's side units, place a small Color 3 square
right sides together against on corner of a Color 2 large rectangle,
with edges aligned. On the back of the small square, lightly draw in
the diagonal, and then sew ON this drawn line. Cut off the excess
seam allowance, pressing the remainder towards the rectangle. Repeat
this with another small square on the adjacent corner as shown at
left. Make four units like this. Add a small Color 2 rectangle
to each as shown at left, pressing seams towards small rectangles.
These should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2". Trim if needed...

|
Now make four of each of the two quarter square triangles shown at
left, using a 1/4" seam, and pressing to the darker side...

Sew a Color 3 half square triangle to opposing sides of each of the
Color 1 large squares, pressing seams towards triangles. Add the
quarter square triangles we just made in the step above to the
remaining opposing sides. Make four units like this. These should
measure 4-1/2" square...
|
|
|
Then lay out all the units, with the extra Color
1 2-1/2" square as the block's center. Sew three
horizontal rows, pressing row seams in alternating directions. Join
the rows to complete the block!
