** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 5" x 18" strip
into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Also cut one Color 1
4-1/2" square (not shown)...

|
|
Next mark and cut the Color 2 5" x 25" strip into twenty 2-1/2"
squares...

Speed piece the blocks four corner half squares by stacking the Color
1 and Color 2 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strips right sides
together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly
draw in the 4-7/8" square line, and draw in the diagonals as
shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked
diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart on the square line
and on the marked diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will
give you four half squares. Press seams to darker side. These should measure 4-1/2" ...

To make the block's center, place a Color 2 square right sides
to against the upper left corner of the Color 1 4-1/2"
square, with outside edges aligned. (I show then slightly staggered
here only so you can see what two pieces of fabric I am using) On the
back of the square draw the diagonal, and sew ON this drawn line. Cut
off the excess seam allowance, pressing the remainder towards the
triangle. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the opposing
corner, and then two more squares on the last two corners...

Using the same squares-on-the-corners method we just used to make the
block's center, now make flying geese units of the remaining Color 2
squares and the Color 1 rectangles. Make eight flying geese units...on
