** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |

First mark and cut the Color 2 2-1/2"
x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares. Then mark and cut the
Color 2 2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x
4-1/2" rectangles. Also cut one Color 1 4-1/2"
square...

Speed piece the half squares by stacking the
Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x 28-3/4" strips right
sides together and all edges aligned...and... |

On the back of the top strip
lightly draw in the 2-7/8" square lines, then draw in the
diagonals as shown above. Now sew 1/4" above and below
the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Cut apart on the
square lines and on the marked diagonals between the rows of
stitching. This will give you twenty half squares. Press seams to
darker side. These should be 2-1/2"square... |

Piece the block by making rows as shown at left.
For the center rows...sew together two pairs of half squares; sew
those to two Color 2 rectangles, then sew those to the sides of the
center square. Alternate pressing directions by row. Done!
