** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting the Color 1 5" x 15" strip into
twelve 2-1/2" squares. Cut the Color 2 5" x 10"
strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Using ten of the Color 1 and eight of the Color 2 squares we just cut,
and 1/4" seams, sew two Nine Patch units as shown at
left...

|
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right
sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip,
lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in
the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut
apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines.
This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards
the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2" ...

|
Following the same speed piecing principal, pair together a Color 1
and a Color 2 3-1/4" x 6-1/2" strips. Mark the
3-1/4" square line, and the diagonals in the direction shown. Sew on each side
of the marked diagonals as done in the previous step. Cut apart on the
SQUARE LINE only. Using a ruler and rotary cutter cut apart each
square on the opposite diagonal from the sewn one, then cut apart on
the marked diagonal lines of each triangle between the rows of
stitching. Each square will give you four
quarter square triangles. Repeat with a second set of these. Sew opposite triangles together to get
eight quarter squares...on to Page 2!
