** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  5" x 9" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles. Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking first  the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2". Repeat this same procedure with the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, and with the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips...

Sew together pairs of Color 2/Color 3 half squares as shown at left. You need four of these units...

Now, to make one flying geese unit, place a Color 2 2-1/2" square right sides together atop a Color 1 rectangle, with edges aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew ON this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the remainder towards the center. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four flying geese units in the same manner. Trim to measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
