** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 2" x 16"
strip into eight 2" squares...
Then mark and cut the Color 2 4" x 13" strip
into four 2" x 6-1/2" rectangles. Mark and cut the Color
2 2" x 14" strip into four 2" x 3-1/2"
rectangles...
Speed piece the half squares by stacking a Color 1 and Color 2 3-7/8"
x 15-1/2" strip right sides together and all edges aligned. On
the back of the top strip lightly draw in the 3-7/8" square
lines, and draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square
lines. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals
between the rows of stitching. This will give you eight half squares.
Press seams to darker side. These should measure 3-1/2"....
Sew four of these half squares together, using the same 1/4"
seams to make the block's center. Press seams in alternating
directions by row...
Next sew the small Color 1 squares to the ends of the Color 2
2" x 3-1/2" rectangles, again using 1/4" seams.
Press seams to darker side. Sew a Color 2 longer rectangle to each of
these pieced strips to make the block's four side units...
