** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 2-7/8" x
11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack these squares
and cut them once on the diagonal to make eight half square
triangles...
Then mark and cut the Color 2 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strip
into two 4-7/8" squares. Stack these squares and cut them once on
the diagonal to make four half square triangles...
Mark and cut the Color 3 2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight
2-1/2" squares...
Sew the Color 1 and Color 3 2-1/2" x 15" strips
right sides together along one long edge, in a 1/4" seam
Press seam to the darker side. Mark and cut this unit at 2-1/2"
intervals...
Sew the strip sets we just made into four patches as shown at
left. Make three units like this...
Next speed piece the half
squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x
5-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On
the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines
and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting
at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on
the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you four half squares.
Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should
measure 2-1/2" ... |
Now make two units as shown at left for the block's upper left and
lower right corners...
..and sew four units as shown at left for the block's sides...
