** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 32-1/2" strip into thirteen 2-1/2" squares...

Cut the Color 2  3" x 12" strip into sixteen 1-1/2" squares...
 Cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 2-1/2"...
Now place a Color 2 square right sides together against one corner of a Color 1 square, with outer edges aligned. (I show them staggered here just so you can see what fabric units I mean)
Draw in the diagonal on the small square and sew ON the drawn line. Cut off the excess seam allowance and press the remainder towards the triangle. Repeat this with another square on the opposite corner, and then on the remaining two corners. Sew Color 2 rectangles to the two sides. Make four units like this. Each one should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"...on to Page 2!
