** Preparing the
Pieces and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by cutting the Color 1 1-1/2" x
14" strip into four 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles... |
Then cut the Color 2 2-1/2" x 7-1/2"
strip into three 2-1/2" squares... |
Next speed piece the half
squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x
14-3/8" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On
the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines
and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting
at the square lines. Cut apart on the marked diagonals, and on
the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you ten half squares.
Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should
measure 2-1/2"... |
Sew the half squares together in pairs, making two
of each unit shown at left... |
To sew the center unit, start by sewing one of the
Color 2 squares to one end of a Color 1 rectangle, with left and
lower edges aligned. I show them staggered here just for
demonstration purposes. Press seam to dark side... |
Then add another Color 1 rectangle to the left, and
again press seam to dark side... |
Next add another Color 1 rectangle to the bottom, and
one more time press seam to dark side...
