** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First mark and cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Now mark and cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Next, mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 18" strip into four 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Mark and cut the Color 2  2-1/2" x 20" strip into eight 2-1/2" squares...

Then, mark and cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Speed piece the half square units by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the 2-7/8" square lines. Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half square units. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics. These should measure 2-1/2"...

To sew the flying geese units, place a color 2   2-1/2" square atop the left end of a Color 1 rectangle, right sides together. Lightly mark the diagonal on the back of the Color 2 square. Sew on this diagonal. Cut off the excess seam allowance and press the remainder towards the rectangle. Repeat this with another Color 2 square on the other end. Make four of these units...on to Page 2!
