** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
Start by marking and cutting the Color 1 and Color 2
3-1/2" x 14" strips into four squares of each...
Now sew two Color 1 and one Color 2 1-1/2" x 27"
strips together as shown at far left. Use 1/4" seams, and
press seams towards darker fabrics. Mark and cut this at 1-1/2"
intervals to make eighteen smaller BWB units...
Then sew two Color 2 and one Color 1 1-1/2" x 21"
strips together as shown at far left. Use 1/4" seams, and
press seams towards darker fabric. Mark and cut this at 3-1/2"
intervals to make six WBW units. Repeat this with two Color 2 and One
Color 1 1-1/2" x 33" strips, cutting into six larger
WBW units at the 3-1/2" point, and eight smaller WBW units at the
1-1/2" point...
Sew the smaller BWB and WBW units into nine patches as shown at left.
Make nine of these units...
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 2 3-7/8" x 38-3/4" strips, right
sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip,
lightly mark the 3-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in
the direction shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut
apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 3-7/8" square lines.
This will give you twenty half squares. Press seam allowances towards
the darker fabric. These should measure 3-1/2"
