** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

First cut the Color 2  3-1/2" x 26" strip into four  3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles...

Then cut the Color 3  3-1/2" x 28" strip  into eight 3-1/2" squares...

Next cut the Color 4  3-1/2" x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares...

Let's speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2 3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips right sides together. On the back of the top fabric, lightly mark the 3-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown as well. Sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonal, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and at the 3-7/8" square line as well. This will give you four half squares. Press to the darker side. These should measure 3-1/2" ...

Now we will make the "flying geese" side units by placing a Color 3 3-1/2" square right sides together, lined up on one end of a Color 2 rectangle. Mark the diagonal on the back of the Color 3 square, and sew ON that line. Cut off the excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the center. Repeat this with another square on the other end of the rectangle. Make four of these side units...

To make the center unit, place a Color 4  3-1/2" square right sides together, lined up with the top left corner of the Color 5  6-1/2" square. Mark the diagonal in the direction shown at left, and sew ON the diagonal. Cut off excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the outside. Repeat with the opposite corner...on to Page 2!
