** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by sewing together two Color 1 and one Color 3  1-1/2" x 6" strips, using a scant 1/4" seam. (now and throughout this block!) Press seams to dark side. Cut this into four 1-1/2" wide segments. Sew together two Color 3 and one Color 1  1-1/2" x 3" strips, again pressing seams to darker sides. Cut this into two  1-1/2" wide segments...

Now sew these together to make two of the Nine Patch units shown at left...

Then cut the Color 3  1-1/2" x 6" strip into four 1-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  1-7/8" x 7-1/2" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 1-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 1-7/8" square lines. This will give you eight half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. These should measure 1-1/2" if needed...

Sew together two Color 3 and one Color 2  1-1/2" x 3" strips, again pressing seams to lighter sides. Cut this into two  1-1/2" wide segments... on to Page 2!
