** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting two Color 1 2-1/2" x 16-1/2"
strips. Then cut two Color 1 2-1/2" x 20-1/2" strips.
Also cut four Color 1 2-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Then cut two Color 3 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strips. Next cut
two Color 3 2-1/2" x 16-1/2" strips. Also cut four
Color 3 2-1/2" squares...

|
|
Now speed piece the half squares by stacking a Color 1 and Color 3
2-7/8" x 20-1/8" strip right sides together and all edges
aligned. On the back of the top strip lightly draw in the 2-7/8"
square lines, and draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the
square line. Cut apart on the square lines and on the marked diagonals
between the rows of stitching. This will give you fourteen half
squares. Press seams to darker side. These should measure
2-1/2" . Repeat this with three more pairs of Color 1
and Color 3 strips, to make a total of 56 half squares...

Now let's piece the block's center! Sew together four
strips of four half squares each, in the direction shown at far left,
using 1/4" seams and pressing seams all in one direction by
strip. Sew a Color 3 small square and a Color 1 small square to the
ends of two half square strips. Sew the other two half square strips
to the sides of the Color 2 center square. Then sew the two strips
with squares to the top and bottom...
|
|
|
Sew the two shorter Color 3 strips to the left and right of the
center, then add the longer Color 3 strips to the top and bottom...
