** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strip into two 4-7/8" squares. Stack and cut the resultant squares once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  5" x 18" strip into eight 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Then mark and cut the Color 2  2-7/8" x 11-1/2" strip into four 2-7/8" squares. Stack and cut the resultant squares once on the diagonal to make eight half square triangles...

Next mark and cut the Color 3  5" x 20" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square line and also the diagonals. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonal, pivoting at the square line. Cut apart on the marked diagonal, and on the square line. This will give you four half squares. Press the seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

To piece the corner units. first sew a Color 2 half square triangle to a Color2/Color 3 half square. Use a SCANT 1/4" seam for this and ALL seams!!! Add a another Color 2 half square triangle to the lower right side of the half square. Press seam allowances towards the half square. Now sew this unit to a Color 1 half square triangle. Press this seam allowance towards the Color 1 half square triangle. Make four of these units...on to Page 2!
