King David's Crown - Page 2

Using a scant 1/4" seam now and throughout the block making, sew the Color 2 and Color 3  2" x 14" strips right sides together along one long edge. Press seam to the darker side. Cut this at 3-1/2" intervals to get four 3-1/2" pieced units...

Next sew together Color 2 and Color 3 Quarter Square Triangles in pairs as shown at left, joining the pairs to make four Quarter Square units. Sew a  3-1/2" pieced unit from the step above to each of these Quarter squares.  These should measure 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"...

The next step is to sew a Color 2  Half Square Triangle right sides together to the top edge of a Color 3  2" square. Press seam towards the triangle. Add another Color 2 Half Square Triangle right sides together to the to the left edge of the square Press seam towards the triangle again. Now add a Color 3  3-7/8" Half Square Triangle, pressing seam towards the  larger Half Square Triangle. This should measure 3-1/2". Make four pieced corner units like this...

Now lay out, and then sew together four units as shown at left. To do this, first join a Color 3  3-1/2" square to a Color 1/Color 3 Half Square, pressing seam towards the Half Square. Then sew another Half Square unit to the pieced corner unit we made in the step above, again pressing towards the Half Square.  Sew those two units together. This should measure 6-1/2" square. Make four units like this...

Now lay out all the units we pieced as shown at left, with the extra Color 1  3-1/2" square as the block's center. Sew three horizontal rows, alternating pressing direction by row. Join those rows to finish up your block!  Good Job!
