This is a 16" block!!

This one is also known as "Snow Crystals", and being a highly imaginative creature,( NOT!) I decided to do it in blues...but wouldn't it be great done in BRIGHTS?!!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 3   5" x 20" strip into sixteen 2-1/2" squares...

Now speed piece the half squares by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 23" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines, and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, and then cut apart ON the marked diagonals and on the square lines. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. This will give you sixteen half squares in this color combination. Repeat with a Color 2/Color 3 pair of strips, and with a Color 1/Color 2 pair, to get sixteen each of those combinations. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Next, simply piece the half squares and Color 3 squares in the order shown at left, first making rows, and then joining the rows to make the block. Alternate pressing directions as you add squares, and rows...
