** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting the Color 1 5" x 9" strip into four
2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...
|
|
|
Next cut the Color 2 5" x 10" strip into eight
2-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 1 and Color 3 2-7/8" x 23" strips, right
sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip,
lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in
the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut
apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines.
This will give you sixteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards
the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed.
Do this same thing with the Color 1 and Color 2 2-7/8" x
5-3/4" strips to get four more half squares in that color
combo...

Next we'll start assembling the block. Using the units we have just
made, make two rows like the row shown at top left.(...one will be the
bottom row.) Next make two rows like the row shown at left right below
the top row.(...one will be the second from the bottom.) To make the
center row, first sew together the four Color1/Color 2 half squares.
Sew a Color 1 rectangle to either side. Sew together two pairs of
Color 1/Color 3 half squares, then sew those pairs to the left and
right of the center unit. Join the five rows to complete your
block!...on to Page 2!
