** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip into five 2-1/2" squares...

Then Speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 5-3/4" strips right sides together. On the back of the top strip mark the 2-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the directions shown at left. Then sew a scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the 2-7/8" square line.  Cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and cut apart on the square line as well. This will give you four half squares. Press seams to darker side, and trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed. Repeat this with a Color 3 and Color 2  2-7/8" x  11-1/2" strip set, to get eight half squares in that color arrangement...

This unit is to be paper pieced, using the template provided, but if you prefer, cut that PP template apart and use the individual triangles as regular piecing templates...add the seam allowances to them and trace and cut out four triangles of Color 1, and four of Color 3, using the template provided, then sew these together in pairs as shown at left, using a scant 1/4" seam, and pressing seam to the darker side. Make four units like this...

Now sew the block's corner units as shown at left. Make four units like this...

Piece the block by joining all the units we've cut and sewn! Make three horizontal rows, pressing row seams in alternating directions.
