** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting the Color 2 3-1/2" x 14" strip into
four 3-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Now we'll speed piece the quarter squares by
stacking the Color 1 and Color 2 4-1/4" x 12-3/4"
strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the
top strip, lightly mark the 4-1/4" square lines (shown far left
in red) and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Sew a
scant 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at
the square lines. (Step A) Cut apart on the square lines only at this
time...
|
|
Cut each of the three squares across the opposite
diagonal from that on which you sewed. (Step B) Now cut apart
each resulting triangle on the marked line between the rows of
stitching. (Step C) This will give you twelve quarter square
triangles. You only need ten for this block. Press seams to darker
side. Sew together pairs of quarter square triangles to make five
quarter squares. Trim to measure 3-1/2" if needed... |
|
|
Lay out all the units as shown at left. Sew three horizontal rows,
pressing the top and bottom row seams to the center, and the middle
row seam to the outside. Join the rows to complete the block! ...on to
