I decided these swallows should take flight off into the Wild Purple/Pink Yonder!

** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Start by marking and cutting the Color 1  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strip into six 2-7/8" squares. Stack these squares and cut them once on the diagonal to make twelve half square triangles...

Now mark and cut the Color 2  6-7/8" x 13-3/4" strip into two 6-7/8" squares. Stack and cut these once on the diagonal to make four half square triangles...

Next, we'll speed piece the half squares, by stacking the remaining Color 1, and a Color 2  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strip, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines. Draw in the diagonals as shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4' above and below the diagonal lines, pivoting at the square lines. Cut this apart on the square lines, and on the diagonals between the rows of stitching. This will give you twelve half squares. Press seams to the darker side. Trim these units back to 2 1/2" square if needed...

Using the Color 1 half square triangles, and the half square units we just made...make four pieced triangle units as shown at left. Use all scant 1/4" seams. Sew each of these pieced triangles to a Color 2 large half square triangle. press seams towards the large triangle. Trim these units back to 6 1/2" if needed...on to Page 2!
