** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|

Cut the Color 1 7" x 14" strip into
eight 3-1/2" squares. Then cut the Color 2 3-1/2"
x 14" strip into four 3-1/2" squares. Stack the Color 1
and Color 2 4-1/4" squares with all edges aligned. (I
show mine staggered just so you can see what fabric units I mean)
and cut them once on each diagonal to make four quarter square
triangles of each color. Then cut the Color 2 3-7/8" x
7-3/4" strip into two 3-7/8" squares. Stack those with
edges aligned and cut them in half once on the diagonal to make
four half square triangles... |
|
|
Next cut the Color 2 3-1/2" x
26" strip into four 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles... |
|
|
Using a scant 1/4" seam allowance sew together
pairs of quarter square triangles with Color 1 always on the right, pressing seams to
the darker side. Sew a Color 2 half square triangle to each of these
pairs. Press seam towards Color 2. Make four units like this. Trim to
measure 3-1/2" if needed. Sew the four of those together to form
the block's center unit... |
|
|
Now, to make one side unit, place a Color 1
square right sides together atop a Color 2 rectangle, with outer edges
aligned. On the back of the top square lightly mark the diagonal. Sew
on this diagonal marking. Cut off the excess seam allowance. Press the
remainder towards the corner. Repeat this with another Color 1 square
on the other end of the rectangle. Make four of these...on to
