** Preparing the Pieces
and Sewing the Block ** |
|
|
Start by cutting the Color 3 2-1/2" x 10" strip into
four 2-1/2" squares...
|
|
|
Next, using a scant 1/4" seam, sew together the two Color 1 and
two Color 2 1-1/2" x 18" strips as shown at left.
Press seams towards darker colors. Trim this at 4-1/2" intervals
to make four pieced units...
|
|
|
Place a Color 3 2-1/2" square right sides together atop
the upper left corner of the Color 2 4-1/2" square,
with outer edges aligned. ( I show them staggered here just so you can see that there are
two layers) On the back of the top square, lightly draw the diagonal, then sew ON this
diagonal line. Cut off the excess seam allowance, and press the remainder towards the
outer triangle. Repeat this with another Color 3 square on the opposing
corner. Then repeat the same procedure
with the other two Color 3 squares on the adjacent corners, again pressing the seams towards the
outer triangles...

|
Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking
the Color 2 and Color 3 4-7/8" x 9-3/4" strips, right
sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip,
lightly mark the 4-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the
direction shown at left. Now sew a scant 1/4" above and
below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut
apart on the marked diagonals, and on the 4-7/8" square line.
This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards
the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 4-1/2" if needed...on
