** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1  2-1/2" x 9" strip into two 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles...

Now cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 10" strip into four 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles. Cut the Color 2  1-1/2" x 14" strip into four 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" rectangles...

Next speed piece the half squares, by stacking the Color 1 and Color 2  3-7/8" x 7-3/4" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 3-7/8" square line and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square line. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 3-7/8" square line. This will give you four half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim these back to measure 3-1/2" if needed. Repeat this with a set of Color 1 and Color 2  1-7/8" x 7-1/2" strips to get eight half squares that size, trimming those back to 1-1/2" if needed...

Sew small half squares to the ends of the short Color 2 rectangles, making two of each of the units shown at top left. Use a scant 1/4" seam here and throughout the project. Also sew small half squares to the ends of the longer Color 2 rectangles, this time making two of each unit shown at bottom left...

Next,  sew the shorter rectangle units to the tops of the larger half squares, as shown top and bottom left, making two of each. Add on the longer rectangles units as shown at top and bottom left, making two of those as well...on to Page 2!
