** Preparing the Pieces and Sewing the Block **

Cut the Color 1 and Color 3  5-1/4" x 10-1/2" strips into two 5-1/4" squares of each. Stack pairs of these. On the back of the top squares lightly draw in the diagonal and then sew 1/4" sway on both sides of the drawn line. Using a ruler, cut apart on the OPPOSITE diagonal, and then, on the drawn line. This will give you pieced triangles. Sew them together as shown at left to make four quarter squares for the block's sides. Trim to measure 4-1/2" if needed...

Cut the Color 3  2-1/2" x 10" strip into four 2-1/2" squares...

Next speed piece the half squares, by first stacking the Color 2 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 20-1/8" strips, right sides together and all edges aligned. On the back of the top strip, lightly mark the 2-7/8" square lines and mark the diagonals in the direction shown at left. Now sew a SCANT 1/4" above and below the marked diagonals, pivoting at the square lines. Now cut apart ON the marked diagonals, and on the 2-7/8" square lines. Each strip set will give you fourteen half squares. Press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Repeat this with a Color 1 and Color 3  2-7/8" x 17-1/4" strips to get twelve in that color combination. Trim these back to measure 2-1/2" if needed...

Sew four pairs of Color 2/Color3 half squares together as shown at bottom left. Stitch that unit to a Color 1/Color 3 quarter square. Make four units like this...

Now, using Color 1 and Color 2 half squares make up four of the units shown at left...on to Page 2!
